After reading a version of The Princess and the Pea, second graders were challenged to build a bed that could hold a "pea" (green bead) and as many "mattresses" (foam trays) as possible. It was great to see them problem-solving in so many different ways!
Mrs. Groeneveld's first graders took a break from the classroom and went outside to build with the blue blocks! They were challenged to make a parent and offspring (something they have been learning about in STEAM). They created snakes, elephants and giraffes! It was amazing to watch them work together and use teamwork to get a challenge done!
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the carnival last Friday. We are excited to announce our winners of the Pie in the Face, Extra Recess, and a Pizza Party. Thank you to our PTO and all volunteers for making the carnival a successful and fun event for families!

When it rains, Mrs. Simcox's students take out their watercolor paints. What a fun and creative way to celebrate the dreary days!
Our March students of the month were honored for "Appreciating the Good in Others." We are so proud of these students!
Our "Principals for the Day" have been very busy this morning. They were rewarded with lunch!
First graders learned about parent plants and young plants today by reading Logan's Greenhouse. They then collaborated to build a greenhouse and playdough models of the plants in the story (pears, carrots, radishes, oranges, etc).
What an awesome experience we had today with all our students! Science is so cool!
Thank you to the Misenhelder and Ramirez families for putting in posts at our school woods entrance! We are so thankful for their help and can't wait to see the new gate in place soon.
We are grateful to our students, families, and community members for helping us raise over $13,500 during our Read-a-Thon in March. This would not have been possible without your generous support. Mrs. Whitford's class won the ice cream sundae party and we had a grade level winner from PreK through 2nd grade. Please see this week's newsletter for the list of winners. We had two groups of ticket winners because we missed the Friday before Spring Break. Great work, Junior Jackets!
Kindergarteners read the book Worm Weather in STEAM lab and then used wooden marble runs to collaboratively construct tunnels for "worms".
Earlier in the week, Dan Carley, made a visit to South Elementary and read to several classrooms to help celebrate March is Reading Month.
We were excited to have guest readers from Integrity Fab and Machine today. We are grateful to have community members that are willing to spend part of the day reading with our students. Thank you to the GIRESD for organizing this event.
After learning about the Grand Canyon in STEAM, students designed their own winding canyon paths with wiki stix. They then drew pictures of animals and plants that would be seen in the canyon and worked with a partner to send a traveler (bead) along the path.
The Gratiot County Farm Bureau sponsored a classroom reading and learning activity for all 2nd grade students presented by IHS students and FFA members. The student volunteers read “Beeman,” the American Farm Bureau Federation's 2014 book of the year. Students then participated in an engaging hands on activity where they made bees and participated in a pollination activity. 🐝

Wow, wow, wow! South students and families are really on the right reading path this week! We have now read 5,400 books/chapters this month! Students are choosing to read during free choice time! Our teachers are also engaging our students in cross-curricular learning with math, art and science projects to show what they've learned about the wilderness! All reading logs must be turned in by Friday March 22nd at 11:00 am! We hope to reach our goal of 10,000 books/chapters read!
